The Sheep of Poshington Hall Farm
Enjoy the adventures of Icelandic sheep with troll given magic in their fleeces who come from beautiful Iceland to live on a farm attached to an old Manor House Poshington Hall in the beautiful fells of the Lake District of England. Their wool supports a small cottage industry of a knitting circle specialising in Icelandic wool.
The main characters are a pair of Icelandic Sheep called Hekla and Freya who have troll magic in their fleeces and a ram called Gunnar. Farmer Joe and his wife Beryl who belongs to a knitting circle. A helpful Icelandic troll called Lilts who was saved by the sheep and in return gave them magical fleeces.
Are the main characters based on real people?
No. But there’s a bit of me and my adventurous spirit in them as I believe that anything can be achieved if you put your mind to it. If I died tomorrow I don’t want to have too many regrets. You make your own ‘magic’ happen. My epitaph would be something like “She lived”.
Is the book based in a specific area?
The Lake District and Iceland. I have stayed in the Lake District many times and love the wide open spaces and the tranquility. I only recently visited Iceland by cruise ship because it’s itinerary circumnavigated the whole country. I just loved the stark beauty of Iceland with its dramatic scenery, coastline, waterfalls, thermal springs and legends of trolls. Drinking fresh water straight from a spring and I fell in love with the sheep and horses. There are similarities with the wildness of the Lake District and that of the Icelandic countryside so fresh and clean.
Is the story based on real events?
I have been drawing sheep and farm characters since I was about 11 and cartoons of my family which I’d give as Birthday and Christmas cards. I did start writing a story about the sheep, animals and the places I drew but never finished it until now, but the normal sheep became Icelandic sheep after my recent visit to Iceland. The cover drawings and illustrations in the books are all my own work (apart from the text).
Well, the Icelandic wool shortage was based on a pair of pure hand knitted Icelandic socks I bought from a small fishing community in Iceland. One got into the wash by accident and shrunk, so I was very cross and it took ages to find a similar pair on line, they were very expensive. I have done a lot of travelling and visiting Historic places and the volunteers I encounter at them are very typical of the characters Hazel and Julie the wardens at Poshington Hall in my book.
Was much research needed to write the book?
Not too much but I did read up about Icelandic sheep and about how many pairs of socks you could knit from a fleece what they ate etc. I knew about the dates of the American Civil War and tied it into the owner of Poshington Hall’s fortunes. Steam packet ships had started offering accommodation to paying passengers in the 1850’s from Liverpool so I dove-tailed it into my story. I have also taken a few cruises in my time and observed just how ‘sheeplike’ people can be on ships. The ‘human flock’ is more apparent in my third book ‘The Sheep of Poshington Hall Farm go on a cruise’. It will be out soon. I laughed writing it, so. I hope you do too reading it.
Is this book part of a series?
Yes. A trilogy to start with, but I already have 3 more in progress.
